Ionia County Jail

Jail conditions, and the behavior of those working in the jail as govt workers, need to be held to a high standard as with any other govt workers.

Many in jail at any given time have not even been convicted of any crime, and even legally may still be found not guilty. Even those who have been found guilty should have the right to a minimum standard of care and professional standards of conduct of those working there that effectively are managing them being made to live in a cage.

The Ionia County Jail has a widely known and long history of operational and condition issues. When people of Ionia deal with corrupt govt workers, the county jail is a place they sometimes end up dealing with. I personally know of someone who did a week and a half in the Ionia County Jail for a DV accusation that later had to be dropped due to lack of evidence. (It can be hard to prove an assault that was known to have never occurred.) The person had to bond out with there own money and deal with bond conditions, inlcuding not being allowed to take there own meds for the duration of bond, per Ionia County govt worker demands. No apology was ever issued to this man by any of the Ionia govt workers whose failure to do there job led to this. Regardless, this is one of many examples of people that even Ionia County had to drop charges against after putting them in jail. (There way of admitting they can not justify putting you in jail.)

State Police

Capt. Kevin Sweeney, Commander

* Although not considered Ionia County "jurisdiction", when the residents of Ionia County request police assistance, the State Police are one of three jurisdictions that may respond and get involved. The State Police Post being in Ionia makes this inevitable.
